Black Widow Bowl

Orange County Pool Skateboarding Underground

One of the lesser known pools to happen behind the Orange Curtain. This is a Anthony Pool with the gnarly 4″ Anthony coping. A super tight left hand kidney, this pool packed a punch! The entire pool was infested with Black Widow spiders pretty much all around just under the coping. It was gnarly riding because you couldn’t really drag your hand when cruising the perimeter unless you wanted to get bitten. A permission pool in Orange County Southern California at the time, I’m not sure of its current status or ride-ability. It was a tough ride so I could not imagine it getting ridden very much since most skaters nowadays tend to prefer perfect skate park bowls. For the adventurous, this place rips and provides quick feedback on how rad you think you are. Its places like this that push skateboarding’s limits not some kid friendly skate park.

AIDS Pool 1988

I remember riding the AIDS pool under the canopy cover, which not only provided shade from the the summer heat, but also relief from the other kind of Heat. The canopy helped shield skateboarders from Long Beach Police helicopters, which frequently patrolled the area.

Pool Skating Tip #13

Bring a broom.

Always have at least 1 solid broom with a good handle.

Having a good broom on any pool skating mission is a must.  If you don’t have one, you might not skate.  If it breaks before the work is done, hope you have a strong back.  The broom is your best friend.  Learn how to sweep, then do a sweeper in the deep end!
